At the last World Cup the drama was Beckham's metatarsal, this time around it's the two broken bones in the right foot of our 20 year-old footballing sensation Wayne Rooney. Initial reports suggest that Rooney is at least six weeks away from a return to full training. Rooney sustained the injury at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, and England Manager Sven-Goran Eriksson has compared an England without him to a Brazil without Ronaldinho. However, the manager remains confident of a good England performance, and the in-form Frank Lampard feels that the squad cannot use Rooney's possible absence as an excuse if they do not win the World Cup. Even without Rooney, the England World Cup squad boasts the likes of Steven Gerrard, Michael Owen, John Terry, Joe Cole, David Beckham and Rio Ferdinand, so cheer up everybody (but keep praying anyway)! In the 25th minute a penalty was awarded against Paul Robinson, which the England players protested vehemently against, but justice was done when Robinson made an excellent save. Rooney received a yellow card in the 37th minute for pushing and was taken off by a cautious Sven just before half time, as Rooney's temper threatened to get the better of him. England's passing was inaccurrate, especially in the midfield, and a scrappy second half meant England never really got going and it finished a rather disappointing game. Sweden 4 - 1 Scotland at Easter Road 13th October 2004 World Cup Germany UpdateOn a cold night in Baku, England enjoyed most of the possession, taking their 1-0 victory over Azerbaijan with Owen's header in the 21st minute. At the Millenium Stadium it ended Wales 2, Poland 3. Rob Earnshaw gave Wales the lead early in the second half, but Tomasz Frankowski levelled the match on 72 minutes and nine minutes later Maciej Zurawski scored Poland's second. Jacek Krzynowek's long-range effort then made it three, putting paid to Mark Hughes' hopes of winning his last game as the Welsh Manager. An injury time header from John Hartson followed, but Wales failed to get any badly needed points. Scotland could only manage a draw against Moldova, going a goal down after 28 minutes when Serghei Dadu scored from six yards. Steven Thompson equalised three minutes later with a shot through the legs of the Moldovan keeper. Northern Ireland scored in the fourth minute of extra time to achieve a 3 all draw against Austria. World Cup Qualifiers - England have beaten Wales 2-0 at Old Trafford todayLampard's early strike was deflected off Owen's heel past the impressive Welsh keeper Paul Jones. In the 76th minute, Beckham scored a blinder of a goal, sweeping the ball across the penalty area and into the top right hand corner of the net. Wales put up determined resistance, but England played well, with young star Wayne Rooney worrying the Welsh defence on a number of occasions. Shortly after his glorious goal, Beckham earned a fractured rib after going for a 50/50 ball with Ben Thatcher. Clearly riled, Beckham's unnecessary challenge on the same player a few minutes later earned him the yellow card that will mean he misses the next qualifier in Azerbaijan.
