Apple launched the Mac Mini In January 2005, thereby making an Apple computer running the Mac OS X operating system very affordable. By launching such a cheap Apple Mac, it is clear that Apple intends to continue mounting a serious threat to the current dominance of the PC, particularly as the new Mac mini is sold as a tiny standalone base unit, that can be attached to the same monitor, keyboard and mouse that a PC would use.

How big is the Apple Mac Mini?

The Apple Mac Mini base unit is just 6.5 inches (16.5cm) square and 2 inches (5cm) high.

What's included in the basic Mac Mini package?

- The Mac Mini base unit contains a powerful processor, decent amount of RAM memory, a sizeable hard drive and Combo drive (DVD-ROM/CD-RW).

- The Mac OS X operating system and the Apple iLife applications suite for video editing and music recording. Also included is the AppleWorks suite for word processing and spreadsheets.

- Plenty of connections. The Mac mini has USB 2.0, FireWire, built-in 10/100 BASE-T Ethernet, a 56K v.92 fax modem, DVI/VGA port and an audio/headphone jack.

- The Mac mini has built in wireless.

- Note that the basic package does not include a monitor, keyboard or mouse, but the Mac Mini is compatible with Mac and PC peripherals and you can use your own USB devices or buy them separately from Apple.
